Event # 2 on the APSPR Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit competition season set to roll

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 18 February, 2011 : - - On Saturday and Sunday, March 12 and 13, the Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit will hold a $15,000 Men’s and Women’s tournament at Domes Beach, in the town of Rincon, on the northwest corner of the island. This will mark the 19th edition of the popular circuit, which runs under the auspices of the A.P.S.P.R. (Association of Professional Surfing of Puerto Rico).

APSPR was founded in 2001 by local surfer and surfboard shaper Werner Vega and his wife, Viviannee, to provide international quality surfing competition to the Caribbean.

The Corona Extra events have become the premier showcase for the veteran surfing legends on the island, like Juan Ashton and Carlos Cabrero, as well as a springboard for a young generation of hot competitors like Brian Toth and Dylan Graves, who are now making their mark in the international rankings. All four of them are previous APSPR Circuit Champions and are expected to compete at Domes.

Graves, 25, from Isabela, became well-known to Pro Surfing fans around the world during last November’s ASP World Championship event, held at his home break of Middles, northeast of Rincon. He was the Puerto Rican Wildcard for that event, meaning that he was selected to face nine-time World champion, Kelly Slater. With thousands of his Puerto Rican fans cheering him from the beach, Graves put on a competitive effort against the Champ, but went down in defeat. Slater went on to win that event and secure his record-setting tenth World Title.

The enthusiasm from that historic event has carried over in the media and put the spotlight on Puerto Rican surfing like never before. Thousands of surf fans are expected to fill the shores of the iconic beach at Domes next month, where the 1968 World Championships were conducted.

APSPR Director Werner Vega is hoping that March at Domes will provide the strong Atlantic swells which make Puerto Rico the surfing mecca of the Caribbean. “The close proximity of Puerto Rico by air has made it the favorite winter destination for East Coast surfers from the U.S., especially the Northeast”, said Vega. “New Jersey pros Matt Keenan and Jason Reagan are regular visitors, and competitors in the Corona events, and are again expected at Domes. Floridian women like Connie Arias, Kirra Shepard and two-time Corona winner, Karina Petroni are also expected to be back again.”

On the Women’s side of the competition, Corona and APSPR have launched the careers of the top Puerto Rican surfers like Idalis “Lilac” Alvarado and Liselie Gonzales. Gonzalez, 23, of Canovanas, was the winner of the last Corona event, at Middles, and leads the current rankings for the Women’s Title.

Brian Toth, 25, of Isabela, was the winner of the Men’s event at Middles, and is the current leader of the Mens rankings, where he enjoys a slim lead over the Bursian brothers, Leslie and Tommy. The Corona Extra Surf Circuit season title will be decided this Fall, after the event at Middles. Another favorite for the event at Domes will be Darren Mushett. He always surfs well at Domes, which is his local break.

Surfing fans that are unable to attend in person at Domes will once again have the opportunity to follow the action online with the popular “Heats on Demand” feature. At the completion of each day of competition they will have access to every scoring ride of the event. On our website you can scan the draw, and select which heat you would like to view and much more.

Each scoring ride is shown, along with the points earned for that wave, through the technology of the Beach Byte computer scoring system. Each of the five judges enters their scores for each surfer’s rides into the computer, which tallies the points and decides the winners. All of that scoring information is then available on the APSPR website to anyone with access to a modem.

All of the competition will take place at Domes as long as surf conditions permit. The nearby break of Maria’s, also in the town of Rincon, is the backup site. Once again Corona Extra is offering a total purse of $15,000, with $10,00 divided among the men and $5,000 to the women.

In addition, Coppertone Skincare will be awarding their popular “Best Performance” award of $500 each, to one of the Men and one of the Women. Last October, at Middles, Brian Toth and Alexis Engstrom each won the Coppertone “Best Performance” for their top heat scores.

All APSPR events have the same goal and commitment:
To determine the best surfers at each event;
To provide them with the highest standard of competition possible;
To improve the knowledge and performance of all competitors;
To provide the competitors and the sponsors with substantial exposure and recognition;
To enhance the professionalism of surfing.

For all interested competitors, entries must be in by Wednesday, March 2nd “After Wednesday March 2nd, a late entry fee of $35 will be charged, until entries finally close on Saturday March 5th, announced Viviannee Vega. Entries can be downloaded at apspr.net and mailed to APSPR office, or paid in person at Hang Loose Surf Shop, located on road 4466, Jobos Beach, P.R..

In addition to both days of surfing competition, Corona Extra will feature nighttime entertainment at several locations throughout the host town of Rincon, ensuring that the fun will continue around the clock all weekend.

An expreso or pocillo is your standard Italian espresso, brewed in an espresso machine and usually taken black. A local term for expreso is pocillo, which is a reference to the small cups in which the drink is served. Pocillos are very potent and highly-flavorable brews.
The cortadito, which anyone familiar with Cuban coffee will know, is also popular on the island. Mostly enjoyed after lunch or dinner at fine restaurants, it is an expresso layered with a very thin sheen of steamed milk. The name comes from the Spanish, “slightly cut.”
Café con leche is like a latté, but in Puerto Rico it usually involves a large dollop of milk in an even larger full-size cup. These are drunk in the morning, at home, local coffee shops or to help one get through traffic jams in rush hour. Café con leche is similar to the French café au lait.

Stayed in March of 2010 and had a awesome time. We have stayed in Rincon before but by far this is the best place . EV and Joe are great people. So willing to share so much about the area and what to do. The apartment was super clean and so was the property. Nice view of the ocean. Joe and Ev told as about a water fall. It was so cool and awesome. One night some renters was noisy and they addressed it with out us saying anything. The bedding good be better quality. Other then that for the price, location and for a property owner making you feel so welcome- don't stay any where else. When I say clean I mean clean. Because I am a clean nut and this was above my standards.

Our Stay at EV's Vacation Rental was phenomenal! The rooms are spacious, clean, and beautifully designed.There is a beautiful backyard with a great view of the water.We had a group of eight and this was definitely a home away from home. We picked guenepas off of Joe's and Ev's tree and they were very helpful with directions and picking out the best attractions in Rincon. We were very close to the beach, restaurants, bars, small plaza's, bakery's, and a small arcade. Ev also has a salon attached to the home where she does manicures, pedicures and haircuts that are very affordable.This vacation home is great for a group as big as ours or for a couple just looking for a romantic getaway. We loved it so much we have booked another stay. This was definitely a trip to remember!

“Nice place on south side of Rincon”

Nice clean spacious rooms with a small kitchenette/coffee maker/ mini fridge. Rooms can easily fit a family or group of 4 with 3 double beds and a futon. If you have a car this is a great budget option to see northwest PR. It is about a 10min drive to maria's and domes and about 7min drive to tres palmas surfing beaches. You can see tarpon right off the beach at the bottom of the hill and the water is very clear. Joe and EV have maps to show you how to get around when you arrive and even gave us directions to the water fall in San Sebastian. I would definitely recommend it and would stay there again.

The overall service was excellent. Our hosts were friendly and helpful and eager to make our stay as comfortable as possible. The room was very spacious with kitchen facilities including a refrigerator, microwave and basic kitchen utensils. Amenities include cable television, AC and communal outside area for with a barbecue grill. The apartment complex has an ocean view and is located on a hill. There is a short walk to the beach where viewed some spectacular sunsets. Although the hosts provide a sitting area outside for guests, it is communal and there is no private access to outside. The location of the apartment complex allows for easy access to many of the beautiful beaches and other sites in Rincon. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

The Best Place for the Best Beaches: Rincon, Puerto Rico

Going to the beach is one of the best things you can do to waste a beautiful summer day. However, your beach day can be ruined if you choose an awful beach to go to. A crowded, dirty, and polluted beach can turn your day in the sun into a nightmare. That isn't the case if you decide to visit the wonderful beach town of Rincon, located in the Northwest corner of Puerto Rico. Rincon is home to some of the most beautiful and secluded beaches anywhere. There is great snorkeling, fantastic surf, and lots and lots of sand for excellent bodysurfing and playing in the shore break.

The first beach you need to check out is Corcega Beach, located just on the outskirts of town. Corcega is a beautiful white sand beach that is somewhat blocked from the surf, so most times the ocean is nice and calm. It's perfect for wading and swimming, and it's very secluded so you can be sure to not see more than a few people on the beach during the peak times. There are a few hotels down the beach, so if you get hungry or just want to lounge on a beach chair, most places are more than willing to give you a hand. It's a perfect place to bring a cooler and some beach toys and have a nice quiet day with the family while working on your tan.

Parque de las Cavernas del Río Camuy (Río Camuy Caves) (tel. 787/898-3100) contains the third-largest underground river in the world. It runs through a network of caves, canyons, and sinkholes that have been cut through the island's limestone base over the course of millions of years. Known to the pre-Columbian Taíno peoples, the caves came to the attention of speleologists in the 1950s; they were led to the site by local boys already familiar with some of the entrances to the system. The caves were opened to the public in 1986. Visitors should allow about 2 hours for the total experience.

Visitors first see a short film about the caves and then descend into the caverns in open-air trolleys. The trip takes you through a 200-foot-deep (61m) sinkhole and a chasm where tropical trees, ferns, and flowers flourish, along with birds and butterflies. The trolley then goes to the entrance of Clara Cave of Epalme, one of 16 caves in the Camuy caves network, where visitors begin a 45-minute walk, viewing the majestic series of rooms rich in stalagmites, stalactites, and huge natural "sculptures" formed over the centuries.

Tres Pueblos Sinkhole, located on the boundaries of the Camuy, Hatillo, and Lares municipalities, measures 65 feet (20m) in diameter, with a depth of 400 feet (122m) -- room enough to fit all of El Morro Fortress in San Juan. In Tres Pueblos, visitors can walk along two platforms -- one on the Lares side, facing the town of Camuy, and the other on the Hatillo side, overlooking Tres Pueblos Cave and the Río Camuy.

The caves are open Wednesday through Sunday from 8am to 3pm. Tickets cost $12 for adults, $7 for children 4 to 12, and $5 for seniors. Parking is $2. For more information, phone the park.

Buying a vacation home for investment may be a great idea in these troubled economic times. Be certain to give location thoughtful consideration. You may pay more initially for a great location, but think things through and you could recover those extra dollars spent for a tropical location. You needed venture beyond the United States to acquire tropical vacations homes. The real property laws of countries outside the United States can be complex and issues of clear title can be overwhelming. As a practical matter, in many countries, foreigners cannot own real property. So keep your investment in the United States.

Owning a vacation home in a desirable tourist spot has the potential to make the property pay for itself by listing it on the vacation rental market. When you aren’t using it, rental income can offset those mortgage payments, maintenance costs, and property taxes!

Due to the current recession/depression, there are some real bargains awaiting you in the market.

There are also financial risks so stay within your means. I urge you to consult an experienced financial adviser to help you assess the risk/benefit of purchasing a vacation home. Arrange an appointment with your banker to get your mortgage pre-approved. This will posture you to act swiftly when you locate the right property.

Now if you are planning to rent a vacation home in your tropical destination, you don’t have the same concerns that we have discussed earlier. Your main goal is to locate a property in the destination of choice that meets your budget and your needs. I’ve mentioned in other articles that I’ve written to broaden your search by using the following terms: holiday rentals, self-catering rentals, holiday cottages, tourist rentals. These terms will give you more hits than vacation rental or vacation home.

Puerto Rico is a great choice for a Tropical Vacation. Puerto Rico located in the Caribbean, just a 3:30 hour plane ride from New York. If your traveling to Puerto Rico from the United States there is No Passport required, and since it a commonwealth of the US the currency does not change, its in the American dollar. Spanish is the main language spoken with English a close second. Most of the tourist flock to the west coast of the island to a town called Rincon, where English is spoken widely. When in Rincon make sure you try your hand at some surfing, it was home to the first Surfing Tournament held in 1968. With an abundance of restaurants, beaches, and places to stay, you never have to drive far for any of your needs. Rincon is known for its Beautiful Sunsets, and one of the best places to view the sunsets is The Rincon Light House. The area is lined with 8 miles of diverse beaches. So, No matter where you stay... Bali is another excellent choice for a tropical vacation. The Balinese are well versed in providing the accommodations most Westerners expect and then some. Bali is the the poster child for tropical destinations. Thailand is great as well. Both destinations offer Western friendly accommodations, gorgeous beaches, friendly people and incredible scenery. There are countless leisure pursuits such as golf, tennis, swimming, diving, snorkeling, sailing and shopping to name but a few.

Don’t overlook Florida and the Keys. These are domestic destinations to be sure, but as tropical as any Caribbean or Southeast Asian destination. Domestic fares are significantly lower than international fares and the economic crisis has blunted tourism in the region. You can be assured of lower costs for accommodations as a result. There are real travel bargains all along the Gulf Coast. Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama are great tropical spots in addition to Florida, which we’ve already mentioned. Wherever you decide to travel, do your homework. Thorough research can spare you a lot of unnecessary grief when you arrive at your destination.

Vacation Rental Vs. Hotel - Rincon Puerto Rico

And the winner is….Well, read this, then decide!

First, the ubiquitous hotel. Swathed in branded names, cookie cutter rooms, marginal service, questionable decor, and exorbitant prices. If you haven’t guessed, I’m not a big fan. Keep that bias in mind. I admit it and put it out there for you, right up front! Staying in hotel accommodations is a hassle. The rooms, although comfortable, are sterile. The fact that you have to eat via room service, venture out in all kinds of weather or settle for the overpriced, mediocre cuisine offered by the hotel’s restaurant, just doesn’t float my boat.If you’re traveling with family or a group of friends, you have to rent an expensive suite or settle for separate rooms. Then there are issues of privacy, laundry, transportation, tips, taxes and stairs and elevators. I could go on but I’m sure you get the point.

Now, with a vacation rental, the scenario is radically different. First and foremost, you are residing in a warm, homelike environment. Your privacy is on a par with that which you enjoy at home. The prices for your stay per person are typically significantly less than you would pay for hotel accommodations, especially true if your are a family or group. You will be able to cook your own meals, wash your own laundry, avoid tips, duck taxes, dodge surcharges and come and go as you please without fear of drawing the attention of the desk clerk who looks at you as if you are stealing the hotel linens.

Then there are the less tangible but real advantages to the vacation rental. You get the real experience of place. You are living in the culture, experiencing first hand what life is like as a resident rather than a guest.

The amenities you will enjoy in your vacation rental exceed those available in the typical hotel. Some vacation rentals offer Cable TV, Internet, telephone service, refrigerator, range, dishes, linens, towels, cutlery, laundry facilities and more space!

Is there a downside you ask. Sure, but no different from booking a hotel. Yes, you may find that the vacation rental doesn’t live up to expectations, but you’ve had the same experience with hotels, I’m sure. You may find that researching vacation rental property is a little more laborious than searching for a hotel. Booking may be a few extra steps, but the resulting experience makes this small extra effort worthwhile.

Now I’m not going so far as to say that vacation rentals are for everyone. If you are a couple, or traveling alone, the hotel can be a good choice. Maybe you are totally comfortable with the hotel atmosphere. It’s okay!

I maintain, however, my position on the validity of a vacation rental as the best choice for those traveling with friends and those all important family vacations. I will concede the fact that vacation rentals are not available for all destinations.

As the title of this article implies, you be the judge. I apologize for my bias but I did disclose that at the outset.

EV and I, played hookie from our regular duty of running our vacation rental (EV Vacation Rentals) and decided we needed a break, before the season picks up and we will have no time to enjoy. We decided to go down to the beach in Anasco. The beach was nice the water was clear and there were only about a handful of people. It is spending times like this together that makes living in Rincon Puerto Rico worth it. There are so many beaches to choose from that you never know where you might end up. Well finally finished putting up my live feed web cam, so people can view Rincon Puerto Rico's weather, Had it up for Hurricane Earl, but didnt want to take a chance that my computer would be struck by lightning during a thunder storm or something. I will try to keep it on everyday..but that is kind of hard. But you get a great live view of the Caribbean Sea, sun, rain..what ever the weather is like..Oh and you might be able to see the awesome sunsets...That is what Rincon is know for, its beautiful sunsets.

Hurricane Earl vs. Rincon Puerto Rico

Well another hurricane came to Puerto Rico and its name was Earl. It packed a punch and there were many towns and people without water and electricity. Mother nature showed what she can do with a lot of water... mudslides. Thank God Rincon didnt get hit that bad..not much rain, But the wind was a relief cooling everything off, until the middle of the night where you can hear the howling wind..I heard things cracking and breaking from flying around in the back yard.. Not much happened, lost 6 banana trees which 2 had bananas on them, and some palm tree branches, and yes, my patio tarp was shredded to pieces... All and all nothing major..And I'm thinking that is the way I would like to keep it..and I think all of Rincon, and Puerto Rico would like it too.

Wedding Day in Rincon Puerto Rico

EV and I were excited as the day of Nov 7, came near..It was going to be our wedding day. Our families were flying in from Long Island,NY and some from Florida. Our families scattered their arrival dates the week before the wedding, All morning flights...that means no sleep for us, it felt like we were waiting for a new arrival every morning...I guess thats because we were!!

It was great to see my mom..havent seen here in a couple years..and it will be the first time down here in Puerto Rico...(She did say it might not be her last!!! She loved it!) and it will be the first time she will be meeting my bride to be..EV(Yvette) They have talked to each other on the phone for years..but never met, Since they talked so much they got along instantly.

My brother John and his wife Pam..were down here for Easter with their kids Johnny and Samantha, and Sam's friend Sue...When they heard we were getting married in Nov, They were not mad at all.. to have to come back here to Sunny Rincon Puerto Rico... but this time they would not bring the kids... Its all about the adults this trip...lol..

My cuz Dave flew in from Sarasota, Florida to be my best man. We use to hang out a lot in Long Island, NY.. until I uprooted myself and found myslef living in Puerto Rico for the last 5+ years...after I left NY..he left a couple years after that to Florida. We chatted on the phone to keep up with each others lifes, but there is nothing like seeing the person in "person".. if you know what I mean..

Ev's Family came in from Florida too..her uncle Tito his wife Sandy... Tito is a old funny guy that likes to drink, and tell jokes and funny stories.. Its one of those things ya like him or you dont....but he is a funny guy..

Ev's Aunts that came in were from Long Island New York, 20 mins from where I grew up...Her aunts Maria, Isabel ..they are funny old ladies that just need a fix that only a Casino can cure...And thats what they did...gamble..

Rhea Maxwell who runs the El Coqui of Rincon newspaper (a newspaper dedicated to news about Rincon Puerto Rico) wrote an artical about us in the December issue. The issue was dedicated to weddings. Since we were married Nov 7,2009 we made it into her magazine (were on page 20-21).
